How to Play ChessMaze

♞What is ChessMaze?

ChessMaze blends the movement rules of chess with the pace of a roguelike puzzle. Every level is a small three-dimensional board scattered with black chess pieces. Those pieces do not move — they are the walls of the maze — but each one still threatens the squares it would normally attack in chess. Your job is to read those threats, find the safe path, and guide your King to the portal at the far end. Clear a level and you advance to a harder one, so the challenge builds the deeper you go.

The game is built with WebGL (three.js) and runs on desktop and mobile browsers alike. It is free to play in full, with optional cosmetic extras planned — nothing that affects your score or ranking.

🎯The goal

Move your King one square at a time toward the glowing portal (⛉) at the end of the level. Reach it to clear the level and move on. Each level you reach is a little harder — larger boards, more pieces, tighter safe paths. You are only ever in control of the King; everything else on the board is an obstacle to navigate around or capture.

🎮Controls

On a computer

• Click a glowing tile to move the King there — one square in any direction, including diagonally.
• Click and drag the board to rotate the camera around your King.
• Scroll to zoom in and out.

On a phone or tablet

• Tap a glowing tile to move.
• Drag one finger to rotate the view; pinch with two fingers to zoom.

♟The maze: pieces are walls

The black pieces are frozen in place — they will not chase you. Instead they form the walls and choke-points of the maze, and you weave the safe lanes between them. You can capture a piece by stepping onto its square, which clears it from the board. But be careful: even a frozen piece still guards the squares it would attack in normal chess. A bishop covers its diagonals, a rook its rank and file, a knight its L-shaped jumps, and so on. Never move onto a square that an enemy piece could capture from, or you lose the run.

⚠️Assist, No Hints & scoring

In Settings → Movement helpers you choose how much guidance you want:

• Assist highlights your safe moves and flags risky squares with a red ✕. Great for learning the ropes.
• No Hints removes the guidance so you read the board yourself — and doubles your score (a 2× multiplier). This is the competitive mode that ranks on the leaderboards.

In general, fewer moves and clean captures score higher, and playing without hints multiplies the result. Assist runs are recorded for practice but are not ranked, so the leaderboards stay a fair, hints-off contest.

⚡The Leap

As you play, your Leap meter charges. When it is full, tap the ⚡ button to vault two tiles at once — clearing pieces, pits and cliffs that a normal single step cannot cross. Timing the Leap well is often the key to a clean, low-move solution, so save it for the moment a wall of pieces or a gap blocks the direct route.

☠Challenge boards & the enraged piece

Deeper inside a level, larger boards reveal from the fog as you reach them, packed with more pieces. Almost every piece stays frozen — but occasionally one is alive (shown in red) and will actively hunt your King. And if you anger a piece by slipping past it, it can become enraged and promote up a tier (pawn → knight → bishop), gaining new ways to move. When a piece comes alive, keep your distance and use the terrain and your Leap to break its line of attack.

🏆Challenges & leaderboards

ChessMaze runs three shared competitions that everyone plays on the identical board:

• Daily Challenge — a fresh board every day.
• Weekly Challenge — a bigger board that runs all week.
• Monthly Challenge — the marquee board for the month.

Each has its own leaderboard with a live countdown to the next one. There are also all-time boards for your best score on each regular level. You can play everything as a guest under a nickname; sign in (free) to claim your rank and keep your stats and best scores across devices. Click any player's name to see their profile, maps and totals.

🛠️Make your own maps

ChessMaze includes a full level editor. Open Player Maps and choose Create New Map to lay out tiles, place pieces, sculpt terrain and elevation, pick a biome, then publish your creation for other players. Community maps get their own leaderboards, ratings and play counts, and anyone — guest or member — can play them for free.

💡Strategy tips

1. Read threats before you move. Trace each piece's normal chess attack lines and treat every covered square as lava.
2. Rotate the camera. Depth can hide a threatening piece behind another; spin the board to see the true geometry.
3. Capture to open lanes. Taking a wall piece can shorten your path — but check what it was guarding before you step in.
4. Bank your Leap. Don't spend it on a gap you could walk around; save it for a wall of pieces or a genuine dead-end.
5. Fewer moves win. Score rewards efficiency, so look for the straightest safe line rather than the most cautious one.
6. Play No Hints for the 2×. Once you trust your threat-reading, turn hints off — that's how you top the leaderboards.
